The "KKA Champs" has been Kapiti Karate Academy's traditional internal Shotokan Karate tournament for years.
This year we opened it up to our friends of all karate styles around the lower north island and beyond.

What an awesome day!
Double elimination.
8th to 7th kyu competitors may perform any kata and can repeat that kata if they wish.
6th kyu and above competitors must do at least 2 different kata over the event (ie: they can repeat a kata once).
3rd kyu+ competitors must do a different kata in consecutive rounds.
Shodan+ competitors will perform 2-up versus, one at a time
Each competitor will compete in at least 2 bouts.
Double Elimination
2-up versus, no contact - free sparring (see note below)
Zero contact to Jodan area (head/face/neck),
Strikes to any scoring area will be considered a score at a distance up to 5cm.
Divisions based on gender, grade, age and height (tbc on day)
Shobu Sanbon: First to three full points wins. Two minute time limit.
Scoring criteria: Points can be 1⁄2 point (Wazari – most strikes) or full point (Ippon – a superior strike that would have ended the fight if contact was allowed).
All strikes must have kime (focus), kiai (spirit shout) and Zanshin (continual state of awareness).
Note: WKF no contact: Controlled skin touches permitted to Chudan area, contact is defined as any strike that diminishes the opponent’s chance of winning - Zero contact to Jodan area. - No open handed techniques or striking beneath the waist, no sweeps or takedowns.
Protective gear: Mouth guards, hand protectors are mandatory; also recommend shin/instep and groin guards (male) and chest protectors (female). All styles/brands allowed (e.g. white padded, WKF red/blue), subject to safety inspection.
Kobudo (13 years and above)
Kobudo is a Gata (kata) contest
Each competitor will compete in at least 2 bouts.
Double Elimination (Lose twice you’re out)
Choose between Bo or Sai
2 up versus, one at a time
Noodle Kendo (12 years and under)
Noodle kendo is a fun Kumite battle with pool noodles

Teams can be made up of mixed gender and grades
3 members per team
You may perform any kata and can repeat that Kata in the following bouts.
Bonus points for the teams who can perform more than 2 synchronised Kata!
Single elimination
Teams are made up of : 1 x Junior (12 and under), 1 x Teen (13-17yrs) and 1 x Adult (18+) of same gender
Team vs team
